Hello Experts,
I am planning to upgrade our entire Cisco voice environment to 12.0(1). Currently, we are running:
CUCM v10.5.1.10000-7
CUC v10.5.1.10000-7
IMP v10.5.1.10000-9
UCCX v10.6.1.10000-39 (ES07-36)
I would like to begin with CUCM but would like to know if v12.0(1) will work with v10.x of CUC, IMP or UCCX. I looked at the compatibility matrix here but I don't know if I'm understanding it correctly. Based on the matrix, I have to upgrade CUC to 12.0(1), and UCCX to 11.6(1). Is this correct? If possible, I'd like to approach the upgrade, one component at a time.
Is there a better approach in performing this environment upgrade? What's generally the best practice?
Thank you for your time,
Randy C.

Hi there
My suggestion is to go for 12.5X instead of 12.0 as dot zero are always buggy.
Plan for a maintenance window. Be done with your backup of all UC Applications.
Start of with CUCM PUB. From 10.5X to 12.X its a Standard Direct upgrade (thru OS Administration) and no cop files are required. Once the PUB is done, upgrade the SUBs. Then proceed with all the Primary Servers of other applications and then their secondaries..
You have to make a note that from 12.X the licensing changed to Smart licensing. Smart Licensing replaces Prime License Manager. Smart Licensing requires you to have a Smart Account created and configured before you upgrade or migrate
the Unified Communications Manager server (Refer Page#22)
Before doing the upgrade, you might need to install a cop file to increase the common space.
• ciscocm.free_common_space_v.cop.sgn. To download the COP files and the Readme files, go to https://software.cisco.com > click Software Download link under Download & Upgrade section, and then, navigate to the Unified Communications > Call Control > Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager) > > Unified Communications Manager/CallManager/Cisco Unity Connection Utilities
Go thru the upgrade guide/preparation thoroughly
Make a note of the deprecated phone models
Hope this Helps
Cheers
Rath!

CUC to CUCM compatibility depends on integration protocol used, i.e. SIP vs. SCCP, but in either case 10.5 will be compatible with 12.X.
For CCX compatibility check out https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/customer-collaboration/unified-contact-center-express/products-device-support-tables-list.html
If you are going to CCX 12.0 you will need to upgrade it along with CUCM in the same window, if you are going to CCX 11.6 you can upgrade CCX before or after CUCM upgrade.
