We have Unity 4.0.4 Win2K SP4 integrated with Exchange 5.5 Unified.

I have checked to make sure the Computer Account is still in AD and active. I have checked DNS to make sure that we have it configured properly. We have rebooted the server several times, still no help. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

I got this message after installing four MS hotfixes - the four dated on December 12/2004 listed in the "Recommended and Supported Service Packs and Updates for Use with Cisco Unity and the Cisco Unity Bridge."

We're running 4.0.3 SR1 w/Exchange 2000. I applied the patches to both boxes, Unity first and then Exchange, and now every time I reboot Unity, errors appear in the Application event log while Unity is shutting down that the mail server is offline, combined with messages in the System event log showing MrxSmb error messages (multiple). This happened on my test lab running 4.0.4 SR1 as well as my 4.0.3 SR1 production boxes. It doesn't seem to be affecting the functionality of Unity at all, but it's highly annoying.

Well, this has evolved into a full-fledged problem.

Now, in addition to the "The mail server is offline" messages, I also get this when the Unity server is shutting down (15-20 in the application event log):

Event Type: Error

Event Source: CiscoUnity_AvRdbSvr

Event Category: Startup

Event ID: 21000

Date: 12/17/2004

Time: 6:02:42 PM

User: N/A

Computer: UNITY

Description:

Failed connecting to underlying database using: provider=SQLOLEDB;driver={SQL Server};Data Source=UNITY;Initial Catalog=UnityDb;Integrated Security=SSPI: 80004005

I mean, is this a problem? I *used* to have a clean event log before I put on the four December MS hotfixes. We are upgrading to 4.0.4 next week...

Answered my own question yet again. I'm posting this in case anyone else runs across this.

I removed all hotfixes dated 12/2004 one by one:

KB870763

KB885835

KB873339

KB885836

Rebooted Unity after each, the AvRdbSvr errors, MrxSmb errors, and "The mail server is offline" errors kept happening when Unity was shutting down...until I uninstalled *all* four hotfixes from both Unity and Exchange. After that, the errors have disappeared.

I don't mind saying that I was seriously irritated, since I had no issues whatsoever with anything on Unity...until I installed those hotfixes. I understand that MS' hotfixes get screwy sometimes, but since they are on the Recommended Updates for Unity list in the docs...oh well, live and learn I guess. That will teach me to be too proactive.
