B22-M3 and Boot from SAN with W2008 R2 SP1

I have a rather weired situation.

Service profile with boot from SAN

Associate with a B22-M3

Boot lun visible

Installing W2008 R2 SP1 on a boot lun (HDS storage) works perfekt

However, boot fails ! we see Windows starting, and then it starts loop, booting again and again

Associating this same Service Profile to a B200-M3 works, Boot from SAN is ok

Has this been seen ?

Walter,

Ok, so I understand he wanted 32GB in the server, with only 2 DIMMs in CPU1

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10280/b22m3_specsheet.pdf Table 24  <<< This only applies if you are mixing 4GB DIMMs with 8 GB or 16 GB DIMMs, since there is no mix in the server, that table does not apply.

Then, as I mentioned above, if he wants 32 GB of memory, he needs to configured as shown below and that involves mixing 4&8GB DIMMs:

B0  B1   C0   C1   D0   D1

4     4      4     4      8       8     <<<< DIMMs size

Now, since he is not doing a mix, he has 2 options:

1- If he uses the 1DPC option, he may provision the server with 24, 48 OR 96GB total  (other options have not gone through QA, reason why other options are not documented. Does not mean it does not work, it means it was not fully tested)

2-If he wants to use only 2 DIMMs (which is different to 1DPC & 2DPC options) he can install DIMMs in Slots B0&C0, as per     Table 2 in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/hw/blade-servers/B22.html    <<<<< So, I was initially wrong cause I ignored this "Table 2", please excuse me

{EDIT} I will look to see if table 2 (from http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/hw/blade-servers/B22.html )   can be included in

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/ps10265/ps10280/b22m3_specsheet.pdf to avoid anyone else ignoring one or the other.

Thanks Kenny

If you read above, this is what the customer actually has, 2 x 16G Dimm's in B0, C0

This means the blue screen during the boot from san problem is still not resolved.

Walter.

Or a more basic question: is a 32 GB memory configuration for B22-M3 and one CPU supported ? I only see the smallest configuration starting at 48 GB.

Btw. this 32 GB Memory configuration ( 2 x 16G Dimms) is running at 1000 Mhz !!!! is this ok ????

Processor is Xeon(R) E5-2403, Memory Dimms are 1600 Mhz capable

Walter,

If you have not, please open a TAC case if you dont mind and ask for the confirmation in regards to the correction/confirmation about the docs discussed, it is complicated without the case number for me.   You may open the case with the keyword "Product Questions and Features"

Hi Wdey,

About this post, do you remember what you did to resolve this issue?

Thanks

Hi Manuel

Very strange indeed !

customer did erase the whole UCS domain, and started after a power cycle from scratch (initially this was only a PoC); and then the whole problem disappeared.

I think, too many changes have been done, without actually doing disassoc / associate the SP; this might be one of the problems.

It is strange, and it doesn't make sense.

Hey Wdey,

I just wanted to let you know that someone I worked with was running into the same issue and we found that what the problems problmes was related to the defect below.

Installation of windows 2008 R2 fails on UCS 2.1.3a BIOS

https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCum84618

Thanks Manuel ! Good to know ! is this fixed with 2.2.1b/c ?

Hi Wdey,

This defect is not fixed yet, but I haven’t seen anyone running into this problem on the 2.2 release.
