RAID configuration for UCS c240 M5SX server

i am Configuring Virtual drives with RAID for UCS C240 M5SX server.

I have 24 Disck.

Do we have any standard Design from cisco for the conbination of the Virtual drives with RAID.

Example:

For C240 M4SX server with 20 Physical disk i was confiruing like :

VD1 = Phisical disk 1 and 2 = RAID 0 = Set as Boot drive

VD2 = Phisical disk 3 to 10 =  RAID 5

VD3 = Phisical disk 11 to 19 = RAID 5

19 and 20 globel Hot spear

But for M5 i am planing for redunduncy like.

VD1 = Phisical disk 1 and 2 = RAID 1 = Set as Boot drive

VD2 = Phisical disk 3 to 12 =  RAID 5

VD3 = Phisical disk 13 to 22 = RAID 5

23 and 24 globel Hot spear

Since we have multiple different customers with hundreds of different RAID combinations, there really isnt a standard design. It really just depends on what you have running on top of the server and what kind of redundancy and/or disk requirements you have.

You plan for M5 looks good to me, having a RAID 1 for the OS and two RAID 5 for data and/or VM.

I think it depends on your specific needs, but I really like your virtual drive planning though, as long as you keep in mind the Drive Types of course (since you're not specifying them in your question).

Mixing Drive Types in RAID Groups

The following table lists the technical capabilities for mixing hard disk drive (HDD) and solid state drive (SSD) types in a RAID group. However, see the recommendations that follow for the best performance.

Mix of Drive Types             Allowed?
SAS HDD + SATA HDD        YES
SAS SSD + SATA SSD         YES
HDD + SSD                          NO

Drive Type Mixing Best Practices

For the best performance follow these guidelines:

  • Use either all SAS or all SATA drives in a RAID group.

  • Use the same capacity for each drive in the RAID group.

  • Never mix HDDs and SSDs in the same RAID group.

All my 24 Disc's are having

Interface type = SAS

Media Type = HDD
