UCS Boot Time

Good day,

We have a few C460 M4s that have an ungodly amount of RAM in them (512 GB).  Booting these servers can take up to 10 minutes while it configures and tests the memory.  Is there a way we could speed that up or are we stuck waiting?

Thank you in advance..

You shouldn't be needing to reboot the servers that often - so is it really a problem?

There is probably an option to disable the memory check - but I wouldn't.

I guess you could remove half the RAM to make it more godly.

Well as I am initially configuring the server and applying patches and such - as well as firmware, I have to reboot several times.  It takes 7+ minutes for it to "configure and test" the memory.  So ultimately every time I modify the profile in test, I have to wait about 10 minutes for a reboot and if for whatever reason I need to get into the boot menu and miss that F6...  Thats 20 minutes.  What I want to do is disable it while I muck with the box, then I can turn it back on later.

I am not physically located in the same region as the server, so I cannot remove memory.

I've looked through the BIOS settings, but did not see an option to shut it off.  Any ideas on where I could find that?

Thanks

I also would like to know if there is a manual way to skip the memory check.  We have C460 M4s as well that have 1.5TB of RAM and if we are using DHCP/PXE to rebuild them and miss the ~3 second window to network boot during the 10+ minute boot time (mostly due to the RAM/system check) we have to wait another 10+ minutes to get the opportunity to catch the PXE boot.

I believe I was told by one of our Cisco reps that there is no current option to skip or disable the memory check.  Our Dell servers have the option to disable the check and it would be nice if Cisco could do the same.  At least this way, I could disable the check during maintenance and re-enable it afterwards if Cisco chooses not to allow for a manual "skip" option.

Aside from why I would like a manual skip option (PXE boot), it seems that from a KVM session a user should be able to skip that check if they want to.  Some of our database servers are bare metal and I'd prefer leave the memory check in place by default but if someone is performing maintenance on them, we should be allowed to skip that check so we can bring the server back online ASAP.  It's actually very annoying, especially since my government customer pays for my time by the hour - I'm sure he'd be glad to know he doesn't pay for 10 minutes of my time every time I have to perform maintenance on a server via the KVM.

Hello, There is currently no way to skip the memory test on UCS servers. We are working with development to push for this in future releases. Thanks, Wes

We are waiting for this for years! Please inform me, as soon this feature is available.

We have 6 Servers with 3T Ram in 3 Domains. A Software Update takes a day, because I have to wait 20min+ for the memory check every time the Server reboots! (Update/Discovery/Boot)

Removing the memory for the Update is not an Option.

Last month we upgraded from FI6200 to FI6300. You have to be patient!

Hey,

Do you have any ETA's that you are going to implement skipping RAM test during the process?

I am shocked that you don't have this so far!!!

Hi Austin

Is this option to disable memory test has been implemented? As per bug CSCtn30759 this is fixed in version starting from 2.2(2c) but seems still it is not there.

Hi, I am just wondering if there is an update on this topic.
