After upgrading CIMC to 1.2(1a) firmware, server is not booting. Stops at "... checking hardware" and restarts itself. What can be done? Can I connect to serial console (need serial cable pinout) and boot CIMC with the backup firmware?

If the server is not getting passed the memory tests/hardware self checks, this sounds like a hardware issue, or a corrupt firmware version. You might want to contact Cisco TAC to get this investigated further.
