You have two options:
- IMAP:
The best form of e-mail retrieval and can also work on smart phones that are connected to the corporate exchange system, this is the ideal method and the one I always recommend first. - SMTP:
When IMAP is not an option this is your last resort, but it does have inherent issues and some major draw backs, such as, if the delivery of the mail fails it will not retry, also even though the delivery was sucessfull the VM still remains on the UC until you check it manually and remove it via the phone (Some organizations may require this as part of their policies so keep that in mind)
That is pretty much the only two ways you can do it, there are various way to manipulate each one with some bending capabilities to the rules, but this can at times generate other problems.
