UC520 problem with internal ISM flash card

Hello  all this is my first post in cisco support community and ofc always there is a problem that needs fixing!

The problem is with the ISM inside the UC520.

Suddenly unity express stopped working.

From what i found the problem is with the installation on the flash of ISM.

For an unknown reason the file system is corrupted.

I suspect a failed flash.

IUC520#service-module integrated-Service-Engine 0/0 status

Service Module is Cisco Integrated-Service-Engine0/0

Service Module supports session via TTY line 2

Service Module is failed

Service Module heartbeat-reset is enabled

Service Module status is not available

I tried to make a new install utilizing the boot-helper using a tftp and ftp server like it is described at cisco's site.

I didn't have any problems with the procedure but the installation stops at some point and a lot of gibberish msgs pop up at the command line.

Yes i used the correct files of unity express for uc520 and i tried different versions.

Every time i have the same problem

So, i need info about where to get a new flash for ISM (what type of CF exactly), if there is such thing and how to properly format it so i can make the clean  installation.

Every information will be very much appriciated !!

D.V.

Here is what it spams at my CLI and then the installation is freezed

add_file /mnt/dwnld/pkgdata/cue-vm-full-k9.uc500.8.0.6.prt1 6 /mnt tgz

Hi Dimitrios,

This almost looks like a kernel panic

Here is my suggestion, power the entire unit down wait about half hour to left the compact flash card cool down (Yes it does get hot ) and then power it back up, if you can leave it for an hour even better.

Then attempt to do a OS upgrade to it, and hopefully before it gets too hot again.

This may bring it back to life, but I warn you that it will be a temporary thing before it fails again.

If the system is not under any support contract and there is no interest in getting one, you can get a high quality Transcend CFC and use that for the CUE, the tricky part is getting the CUE image onto it

Cheers,

David.

Something similar happened to me a few months back.  I had the same messages that you received.  Unfortunately, your CUE module is beyond repair.  If you have SMARTnet on the device, get this unit replaced.  I don't think there are replacement internal flash cards for these devices.....

thank you both for your replies.

Kernel panic was the problem due to faulty cf card.

The cooling off method didnt work.

I change it with a new one and the clean install worked .

After that, restoring the backup was very easy and the system is now up and running like before.

It helps also if you have the wav files and the AA scripts backed up.

All these years playing with cisco equipment first time i had problem with a flash card.

There is a first time for everything.

Hi Dimitrios,

I have exactly the same problem with my UC520. Would you share what kind of flash card do I need? From where can I buy it?

Thanks!

Hello dizma

You can use any brand of CF card. Better to use Cisco.

I used a transcend 1GB that i had spare and since it worked i didnt change it to a cisco one.

The cost is about 15-20$ and you can buy it from any online shop that sells CF cards.

The CF type is a standard so you will not have i think any compatibility issues.

Thanks a lot!
