Dial-Up connect speed only 33.6Kbps ???

Hi ,

I have a customer who needs to have a remote access solution on dial-up PSTN. Currently he has a 2600 router with NM-16 AM module. The problem here is that the max connect speed he gets is only 33.6Kbps.

Can he get upto 56Kbps on the existing module ?? The remote users are dialing through a 56K modem attached to a PC.

The users complain that they can connect to the ISP at 56K but when they dial the HO 2600 router, they get only 33.6K or even less at times....

In order to get 56K/V.90 speed, we need to have a analog modem with analog line dialin to digital transmission path with digital modem on the access server side or vice-a-versa.

PC..analog modem---pots---Telco----T1/E1----Digital modem..Access Server

So in other words, 56k/V.90 speeds can only be achieved if Anlog modem over analog line dials in to digital modem over digital lines like T1 Or E1 Or BRI.

In your case, 2600 with NM-xAM is analog modem module and PC also has analog modem, so the max speed will be V.34+, around 36K. Analog connection to Analog modem will results in max 36K speed.

PC--Analog modem----pots----Telco----pots---analog modem(NM-xAM)

While dialing to ISP with analog modem you will/should get ~56K as ISP uses T1/E1 lines with digital modems in Access server.

Here is the link which will explain you more in V.90/V.92 technology requirements

HI

I've the same problem with a customer.

Is there a posibility (perhaps with an external isdn modem?) to get 56K?.

The NM-xAM are internal analog modems & for dial-in can best connect at v34 modulation (33.6k speeds), these modems are directly connected to a POTS line so when the remote client modem that is 56k capable dials into the NM-AM modems we have more than one A to D converion (Analog to Digital) thus cannot do better than v34 modulation.

Now when the same 56k client modems connect to the ISP they are actually diaing into a digital line (T1/E1/T3/E3) at the ISP end, that means there is only one A to D conversation & we can connect at v90 modulation.
