Hi from a newbie,
Assuming they are suitable, I want to use one (or two) AP1232AG-E-K9 access points for Internet connection through a public wireless network (BTFON), where wire broadband is not an option. I've downloaded what I think is the correct manual for the APs and I'm now scratching my head as to where and how to start setting them up. I want to use these Cisco APs in the hope they will give me better wireless performance than I'm currently getting, which is frequently flakey.
I've tried to reset the APs to the factory default but there seem to be different ways of doing this depending on what you want and what you've got. I made up a console cable to access the console but there even appear to be different versions of this so I'm not sure if the cable I have is the correct one.
I have setup and used lower end wireless devices in the past but these Cisco units seem real complicated and I'm going to need help in getting them working.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Glenn.

I don't currently have access to any of the BTFON hotspots as they are either all turned off or out of range but presumably any broadcast SSID will do as long as I can login into its router?
Perhaps a silly question but is there a space between ssid and XXXXX in your intructions and what does the ! represent, apologies for being dumb.
I got the following when I tried the instructions and I can't move on from the last line, it appears to have frozen at the last word (console). I've tried a reboot but the AP is not responding.

Hi,
There is a space after SSID.
Exclamations( ! ) placeholders for separation between different commands typed in Cisco ios architecture. Nothing major but basically shows end of specific configuration sessions.
Do you have any of your device configured with the SSID (oliverread)?? I'm hoping that this device is trying to connect to this and hence you are getting this message. Check any of your wireless device has the MAC address of 0021.0482.19ea and if so trun it OFF.
So inorder to test this now you need to find the BT open SSID.
Also once the configuration is completed please type as below to save the configuration.

I've moved the AP to a point higher in the building where my laptop wireless shows several hotspots, including some for BTFON.
I'm trying to run the configuration commands but every few seconds the AP outputs -
*Mar 1 00:08:28.457: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BVI1, changed state to up
*Mar 1 00:08:29.457: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface BVI1, chan
ged state to up
*Mar 1 00:08:38.327: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface BVI1, changed state to down
*Mar 1 00:08:39.327: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface BVI1, chan
ged state to down
Could this be due to using a longer cable for the console connection and is there a way of stopping this happening?
Showing my ignorance again - do I have to enter Exclamations( ! ) placeholders?
(oliverread) is the SSID of the wireless in the Broadband router I'm currently using to connect to the Internet. I switched it on for the AP setup as I could not find any BT hotspots, I've now switched it off.

Hi,
You dont have to enter !. You just cut and paste line my line with out !. I hope connecting the AP to your laptop using a ehternet cable and that would stop the error message which is poping up. This is nothing to do with the console connection.
If you are seeing BTFON ssid and your AP is reconsifigured with correct SSID, please provide the output of
AP# sh ip int brief
AP# sh dot11 asso

Here is the log as requested but as you can see the error messages are causing problems, it is not possible to get the command typed in before the error message is displayed.

BTFON? As in UK's BT? Are you in the UK?
If you are in the UK, contact the UK. They can send you the configuration for your WAP and your router so that you can broadcast BT's SSID in your premises.
Was there in the UK for a week and and I saw alot of shops with this setup.

Yeh leolaohoo it is the UK's BT. Unfortunately BT are not always as helpful as they could be

Try these commands for pop ups. By the by did u connect the AP to the laptop using ethernet cable?

Hi Najaf,
Your popup instruction worked, thank you.
I've followed your previous instruction -
--------------------------------------------------------------
conf terminal
interface Dot11Radio0
ssid XXXXX (pick one of the SSID which have good signal and replace with XXXXX)
!
station-role workgroup-bridge
no shut
!
dot11 ssid XXXXX
authentication open
!
exit
After applying this please provide output of below command. Ensure that cable is removed from Fastethernet0 interface
ap#sh ip int brief
ap#sh dot11 ***
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- but it fails at the ap#sh dot11 *** command. Should I have used the AP# sh dot11 asso ?
I have not connected the AP to the laptop using ethernet cable, is that what you wanted me to do?

The AP is located in a position where it should see several hotspots.
I can connect the AP using an extended console cable or the fast ethernet or both together.

Hi,
Do you see any SSID named BTWIFI there on your laptop? Also please provide full configuration of AP with "show run" command.
Regards
Najaf
11-14-2012 02:52 AM
Morning Najaf,
Yes BTWIFI is visible on the laptop list of available wireless networks, also BTWIFI-with-Fon is visible but I get the same results when trying to associate(?) with that hotspot. I have tried to associate(?) with other none BT wireless networks but also get the same result, however, the other non BT networks require WEP and/or WPA wireless encryption key.
I realise we have not been able to configure the AP yet for anything but can you tell me if it is possible to configure the AP to show all available networks similar to the way they are shown on a laptop/desktop?
Here is the output of the "show run" command:
ap#show run

Hi Glen,
As far i know there is not way by which AP gives information like on laptop.
Is there any way for me to get a remote access to this AP using teamviewer ir something like that.?
Regards
Najaf
11-14-2012 04:20 AM
I don't see why not.
I'll have to download TeamViewer and install it, which I'll do right away.
Glenn.
