1200 with G radio and B clients

I have a couple of 1200 AP's with the G radio installed. We have several clients from various brands. Gateway/HP etc that have A/B cards on the client and are unable to connect to the 1200. It sees the SSID etc in the windows wireless configuartion screen but when trying to connect it gives an error.

"Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks and try again."

This only occurs on clients that dont specifically have a card that is "g" compatiable. I have set the data rates to default as well as best range and no luck. Any thoughts or ideas are apprectiated.

Hi Corey,

Have you tried disabling the Aironet Extensions?

Q. How do you make your AP work with other IEEE 802.11b devices?

A. In order to enable the AP to communicate with another 802.11b device, turn off Aironet extensions. Check the Non-Aironet 802.11 check box in the Express Setup window. Alternatively, you can click the Use Aironet Extension radio button in the Advanced AP Radio window.

From this doc:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item09186a008009483e.shtml#qa10

Disabling Aironet extensions sometimes improves the ability of non-Cisco client devices to associate to the access point.

Aironet extensions are enabled by default. Beginning in privileged EXEC mode, follow these steps to disable Aironet extensions:

Command Purpose

Step 1

configure terminal

Enter global configuration mode.

Step 2

interface dot11radio { 0 | 1 }

Enter interface configuration mode for the radio interface. The 2.4-GHz radio is radio 0, and the 5-GHz radio is radio 1.

Step 3

no dot11 extension aironet

Disable Aironet extensions.

Step 4

end

Return to privileged EXEC mode.

Step 5

copy running-config startup-config

(Optional) Save your entries in the configuration file.

From this doc:

Hope this helps!

thanks for the reply.

Yes I have tried this as well through the web-page, thought to be safe I followed your instructions and still I am unable to connect a client with a "B" card to the AP.

Hi Corey,

What version of IOS are you running? Have you looked at these items?

Throughput Option for 802.11g Radio Blocks Association by 802.11b Clients

When you configure the 802.11g access point radio for best throughput, the access point sets all data rates to basic (required). This setting blocks association from 802.11b client devices. The best throughput option appears on the web-browser interface Express Setup and Radio Settings pages and in the speed CLI configuration interface command

Non-Cisco Aironet 802.11g Clients Might Require Firmware Upgrade

Some non-Cisco Aironet 802.11g client devices require a firmware upgrade before they can associate to the 802.11g radio in the access point. If your non-Cisco Aironet 802.11g client device does not associate to the access point, download and install the latest client firmware from the manufacturer's website.

I might also set the Data rates as per the documentation for b and g radios, rather than use default. (could be worth a try)

Hope this helps!

Rob

Here is my current software version. It is up to date I believe.

Product/Model Number: AIR-AP1231G-A-K9

Top Assembly Serial Number: FTX0815R1GJ

System Software Filename: c1200-k9w7-tar.123-8.JA

System Software Version: 12.3(8)JA

Bootloader Version: 12.2(8)JA

Also I have the AP set to either "Best Range" or "Default" and not "Best Throughput"

I am looking into firmware upgrades atm, but haven't found anything as of yet. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
