9800-40 WLC move

Im moving a HA pair 9800-40 WLC from location to another. Is it possible to just change the management IP addressing and the failover IPs via cli. I can find plenty documentation on configuring out of the box but nothing on how to move them.

I didnt want to wipe and rebuild if possible.

Thanks

Mgmt interface is where all the AP will be registering  - it all depends how you like to move.

If you re-ip new place, then you need to make a plan to change the IP

When migrating from VLAN A to VLAN B, ensure to first create VLAN B and SVI B, and associate SVI B with the Wireless Management Interface (WMI) before removing VLAN A and SVI A. This sequence prevents multicast traffic issues, ensuring all devices, including those behind WGB, receive multicast traffic correctly.

Im replacing some 5520s with these 9800s so an interim measure will be to move all APs to the 5520s while I move the 9800s into place. 5520 software and older APs have been upgraded during this upgrade process.

I did consider creating a second SVI first but wasnt sure if that was the correct way to go.

thanks for your response. that's very useful

In this case, I suggest configuring the new Cat 9800 at the new location and testing whether everything is working as expected, like the old one.

Then, you can have small downtime and move the AP to the new Cat 9800, which is the best way to move forward.

  - Probably that should work ; after doing (or attempting to) ; check the configuration on the active  controller (again)
using the CLI command show tech wireless and feed the output from that into Wireless Config Analyzer
Use the full command denoted in green, do not use show tech-support  for  WirelessAnalyzer

  - (Adding) : Use the CLI command terminal monitor when starting your operations to have a follow up of console messages (too).
The following commands can be useful for troubleshooting issues with the HA Pair (if needed)  :

   => test wireless redundancy rping

        show redundancy | i ptime|Location|Current Software state|Switchovers
        show chassis
        show chassis detail
        show chassis ha-status local
        show chassis ha-status active
        show chassis ha-status standby
        show chassis rmi
        show redundancy
        show redundancy history
        show redundancy switchover history
        show tech wireless redundancy
        show redundancy states

show platform hardware slot R0 ha_port sfp idprom  (if the RP is connected over fiber)

The one thing you can do is define the ap high availability with the new ip address. Since you are moving from 5520's to 9800's, as long as the ap's know the name/ip of the controller, it should be able to find the 9800.  That way, once you have the 9800's up, you can manually move a few ap's to the 9800's to make sure the ap's have connectivity and can join.  It also allows you to test to make sure your configuration on the 9800 is working if you have not tested that out yet.
