Everything I can do with exec mode "ap name" commands on the 9800, I should be able to do with "ap mac-address" also. So for example to rename an AP I would currently do:
ap name <old_ap_name> name <new_ap_name>
but I want also to do:
ap mac-address <ap_eth_mac> name <new_ap_name>
You can do this on AireOS WLCs using a different command form, for example to rename an AP:
config ap name <new_ap_name> <ap_eth_mac>
I don't seem see anything similar in the command list for 17.6 or 17.7 for the 9800.

Reach out to your Cisco Wireless SE/PSS and ask them to raise a "product enhancement request" (PER).

don't think you can do "ap mac-address <ap_eth_mac> name <new_ap_name>" on AirOS , what version you are running ?
(AirOS) >config ap m?
mesh-internal-dhcp mgmtuser migrate mode monitor-mode
(AirOS) >config ap n?
name nsi-ports

I edited the original post to clarify, on AireOS the syntax is different, for example "config ap name <new_ap_name> <ap_eth_mac> "
