How can I resolve the issue of not being able to manually customize device categories on WLC in Flex mode, just http tlv caching and http tlv caching , no ISE

Hi,

@Kagamigawa Look here to understand requirements for device classification to work, otherwise classification relies on HTTP/DHCP probes (which seems to be the case from your provide output).

The iPhone 17 Pro is classified as an unclassified device on the 9800 wireless controller, resulting in the Apple Specific Requests (ASR) feature being disabled, but the iPad Air M3 works normally.

Hi,

@Kagamigawa From the documents I've shared, did you validate correct configuration on Cisco side? The iPhone 17 family uses a newer Apple proprietary networking chip, N1, there might be some challenges here. On the second document, there is a troubleshooting / debugging process described. Follow it and post the logs here for analysis.

DHCP option 55 has undergone some changes, and it is not the same for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

device classification uses probes that scan information in several types of packets sent by a client 
packets from newer types of devices may contain intformation that the controller's OS does not yet recognize
-> wait for a supported release 

ISE also investigates the packets and seeks a correlation to classify a device
to my knowledge ISE classification correlates even further than the WLC
-> same goes here for newer device models : you need an update package for ISE
do you use ISE? then i think you need to make the modification in ISE, not the WLC.

last: a device classification also pose a security issue for the device itself!
a hacker can misuse the same information to detect the OS version and more
and with this can adjust it's attack on a specific vulnerability for that model/OS
-> it might happen that vendors take measures so it gets more difficult to classify such a device
(as Cisco has close contact with Apple, i don't think this is the case, but it might happen)

It's true that this problem is, but it hasn't actually been fixed, at least not on 9800-cloud vm. Trying to use the custom xml template can only display the custom model, but the ASR is still in the disabled state.

Maybe contact TAC or upgrade to version  17.18.X to test; this option is required.
