- FYI : https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/access-point-controller-selector.html?guide=access_point_only|new_access_point , exclude models which have Controller based in description ,

You can use the Embedded Wireless Controller (EWC) that can runs on must Catalyst 9100 AP. Yes, it is a controller but not an additional device in the network. You could also use the Cisco Business Wireless (CBW) devices which also include a controller on the APs itself without needing any additional devices.

You need something to control the AP. And if you don’t have a dedicated controller, EWC has to take this role. But if you have just one AP with EWC, it is pretty much like “standalone”.

The point is EWC is controller + normal AP function - they run like 2 separate virtual machines on the same piece of hardware (the AP). Each one requires an IP address and then the AP part joins the controller part.
