Are you trying to use the automatic download on the GUI?  If so that will not work.  Refer to:
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/field-notices/724/fn72415.html

You can download the updated software directly from Cisco and then update from a TFTP server.  Remember to download the zip file for upgrades.  The tar file is only used to convert from CAPWAP to ME.
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286306794/type/286289839/release/8.10.196.0

Note: upgrading direct from 8.5.140.0 to 8.10.196.0 might fail as the AP runs out of flash space (well known issue).
The workaround for this is to backup your ME config, convert the AP to CAPWAP mode, install the 8.10.196.0 CAPWAP image:
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286306794/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK11
Then convert the AP to ME again using the ME .tar image, then restore your config backup.
