It's more a case of what software version the WLC is running and what version the AP requires, I.e. one of the latest APs requires WLC version 7.2, which is not supported on the 2100 or 4400 series controllers
Check at the documentation for the WLC software version for the supported APs, generally speaking - the latest version support most of the previous models of lightweight APs, with some exceptions
