Hi,

I have two C9120XI-B APs that are not able to join the EWC which is loaded on another C9120XI-B AP.

here is the log I get on my APs. I have reset the APs and tried to load the image on them through Software Management tab on my controller but no success.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

 - You could be hit by this one : https://community.cisco.com/t5/wireless/c9130axi-e-stuck-downloading-image/m-p/4773527/highlight/true#M251543
Besides what is discussed you can also try to install 15.3(3)JPQ2 manually on the APs or  a test AP (that is the corresponding CAPWAP image)
Besides all of that , as what has already been mentioned : EWC needs to be setup to provide images for APs trough an external tftp server , because it has no space to keep them locally.

Thank you very much for helping me understanding the issue.

I have setup tftp server on my laptop connected to the same subnet. i have below files in the storage which were downloaded from Cisco download page. I also tried to download the lightweight tar file from Cisco site but it asks for service contract in order to download and I don't have that on my account

sharlpak_0-1733506489890.png

when on WLC I go to software management tab and give the tftp server settings, click on save and download, it starts downloading ap3g7 file from server and then gives me below error log:

install_add: START Thu Dec 5 09:56:40 PST 2024
FAILED: install_add : Default profile addition failed due to no response from wireless side

and when I go to "not joined" AP tab here is the message I get

any recommendations?

Check this guide. Check "Updating Cisco EWC software" make sure you followed those steps.

Cisco Embedded Wireless Controller on Catalyst Access Points (EWC) White Paper - Cisco

1. Did you mean ap1g7 not ap3g7?  The 9120 software is ap1g7.

2. You did not say what version you were trying to load from TFTP?
As others have explained there is too much difference between the current AP version (8.10.130.0) and the version you want to go to (17.12.3.31).  You must upgrade to interim versions to get there.  Initially you will have to do that from the AP CLI ideally C9120AXI-AP#archive download-sw /reload ?
WORD URL of AP image <tftp|sftp|http>://<server_ip>/<file_path>
and only start using your EWC GUI/CLI once the AP is running the correct version.

You should start with 8.10.196.0  (15.3.3-JK11) but that is a lightweight image because there is no EWC image for the AireOS versions.
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286322988/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK11
You could also use the Mobility Express image if you can download that because it contains the 9120 as a subordinate AP which is effectively as lightweight AP:
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304536/type/286289839/release/8.10.196.0

You could try going direct to 17.6.8 (15.3.3-JPK9) as a first step:
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286322988/type/286323077/release/17.6.8

Only after the AP is running 17.6.8 should you try to load 17.12.3 (15.3.3-JPQ2):
https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286322988/type/286323077/release/17.12.3

EWC images are provided in the form of a zip file. The zip file contains:

  • EWC .bin image (example: C9800-AP-iosxe-wlc.bin)
  • AP image for all APs that can join EWC (example: ap1g4, ap1g7)
  • Readme.txt file that specifies which image corresponds to which AP model

Make sure to extract the contents of the zip archive to your TFTP server. The AP needs access to these files directly, as it is not able to get them if they are still in an archive.

Unlike a 9800 controller, the EWC flash memory does not have enough space to store all AP images. All the AP images need to be hosted on an external TFTP or SFTP server. When a second AP tries to join, the EWC points it to the external server. Without these commands, no other AP is able to join it:

EWC(config)#wireless profile image-download default
EWC(config-wireless-image-download-profile)#image-download-mode tftp
EWC(config-wireless-image-download-profile-tftp)#tftp-image-server <TFTP Serer IP>
EWC(config-wireless-image-download-profile-tftp)#tftp-image-path /

EWC#write memory

I prefer the above CLI commands over Web Interface.

Please following the image upgrade process from the link -
