ap-type mobility-express tftp://<ip-addr>/<file-name> not working

I am trying to upgrade my Cisco Aironet AIR-AP2802i-B-K9 (v01) from LWAP to Mobility Express but somehow the command 'ap-type mobility-express tftp://<ip-addr>/<file-name>' does not seem to work although it works with other 2802i APs I have(they are v02 but I'm not sure if that's what the problem is).

The output is as follows

APA0E0.AF2D.4924#ap-type mobility-express tftp://10.0.20.10/AIR-AP2800-K9-ME-8-10-196-0.tar

ap-type mobility-express tftp://10.0.20.10/AIR-AP2800-K9-ME-8-10-196-0.tar
              ^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

It seems like the error begins right when the 'm' for 'mobility-express' appears. The LWAP version I'm running is 17.15.3.28

And the ME version I'm trying to run is the 8.10.19.6.0

I have ensured to have entered the command to give the AP an IP address and it works(I did `capwap ap ip 10.0.20.5 255.0.0.0 10.0.20.10`)

Any help is appreciated.

I see where the problem is. Your AP is currently running on 17.15.3 image which is IOS - a completely different image type compared to 8.10.196, which is an AireOS image type and due to this you are not getting the 'ap-type mobility express' CLI option and in return getting 'invalid input'.

So what you need to do here is to put a lightweight image from AireOS genre (I would say use15.3(3)JK10 - which is the AP image corresponds to the version 8.10.190) first.

link to download the image - https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304510/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK10
Commands to use - archive download-sw /reload tftp://<ip address>/file name

Once done then you can try the mobility express conversion. I am expecting it to work.

Sadly I can't prove if it works or not since that file specifically requires for me to be a service contractor

There is a way to get the firmware legally and for free.  Here are the steps:

1.  The filename for the last 2800/3800/4800 AireOS is "ap3g3-k9w8-tar.153-3.JK11.tar".

2.  The filename for the last 2800/3800/4800 Mobility Express is "AIR-AP4800-K9-ME-8-10-196-0.tar".

3.  Read Multiple Cisco Products Switch Integrated Security Features DHCPv6 Denial of Service Vulnerability & scroll down to the "Customers Without Service Contracts" section:

Customers Without Service Contracts

Customers who purchase directly from Cisco but do not hold a Cisco service contract and customers who make purchases through third-party vendors but are unsuccessful in obtaining fixed software through their point of sale should obtain upgrades by contacting the Cisco TAC.

Customers should have the product serial number available and be prepared to provide the URL of this advisory as evidence of entitlement to a free upgrade.

4.  Call TAC.  Do not email them.  CALL.

5.  Provide TAC the following information:

  1. Serial number of the AP
  2. Filenames (steps 1 and 2)
  3. URL of the files (steps 1 and 2)
  4. Security Vulnerability Bulletin URL (step 3)

Good luck.

I was on a call with them and told them everything you showed here. Sadly they said that I need to update my profile so that it doesn't show as "guest" by updating my company details. Right now I don't work for a company in a tech-related field. It seems like I reached a dead end

You can also try searching for the image - sometimes you may get lucky.
Anything from ap3g3-k9w8-tar.153-3.JK3.tar to ap3g3-k9w8-tar.153-3.JK11.tar should be ok for you to do the conversion.
