Can't get passphrase to work with WEP

Dear Support,

May be a repeat question of a previous post, so apologies in advance. (I didn't find the answer in previous posts)

I have put in 6 x 1230b/g AP's in our public area for Guest access. Each is configured to use WEP.

We will later (when time is permitted configure a secure WLAN for employee use) obviously this will be on a separate VLAN and through PEAP with certificate server and an ACS box.

At the moment I just want to keep the public (unsecure) WLAN as simple to use for our guests (who will use numerous types wireless adapters and devices).

I configured a static WEP key on all AP, and used an ASCII to hex conversion tool to create the WEP key.

However when we connect, we have to enter the 26 character HEX WEP key rather than the 13 character ASCII string.

Am I doing something wrong or should we be able to enter either the ASCII or the WEP key. (this is using HP notebooks that are Cisco compatible)

If the Client utility supports hex key usage, I suggest that you configure WEP in hex, rather the client utility will convert it to hex. you just have to type in your plain password. If the client utility does not support hex configure WEP key in ASCII on both AP and client.

Thanks for everyones assistance on this, the issue seemed to be the power level on the APs, once this was turned up from the 1 mw setting all is now working with the passphrase.

I recently activated WPA-PSK on one of my 1240 AP ssids and I seem to have a similar problem. It seems to be sensitive to the client software being used. I tried the funk odyssey client and had no trouble, but I could not get the Intel to work until I used the 64 hex characters on both sides. You might try the funk client to see if it works. At least you will know if it is a client issue. You can download a 30 day trial copy from their web site www.funk.com
