Chromecast with Fabric Wifi not working

Hello,

I have a fabric network both on wired and wireless configured by DNA Center but because of internal DNAC problems I modify WLC manually. Both Wifi and Wired are in the same network. When my Laptop and Chromecast both are connected with cable and in the same network, Chrome could find TV. However when I put my laptop in Wifi  Chromecast in cable it does not work. I checked with Wireshark no response for my SSDP discovery packet. I really need this to be configured as in second scenario as workers in my company in need for chromecasts.

The AP that I connect my laptop sits in different Edge switch than wired chromecast.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

Google Chromecast uses Multicast DNS and the services can be distributed and discovered when service source and receiver are in common Layer 2 broadcast domains.

Since your Google Chromecast devices are belonging on to separate subnets and possibly between multiple fabric-edge switches then this requires Wide Area Bonjour capabilities.

Feel free to reach out me if you need any assistance in implementing end-to-end Bonjour solution. In meantime, kindly refer to following URL providing supporting Deployment Guides, Configurations Guides and more:

The key here is probably multicast which needs to be enabled. If the devices are in different subnets then you'll need mdns gateway/snooping.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/mesh/8-2/b_mDNS_gateway_chromecast_support_feature_deployment_guide.html
Hope this helps ...

I assume the problem is not with Multicast but with TTL=1 in chromecast discovery packet. I assume in fabric traffic between different switches are routed not switches so TTL=1 does no work.

That's the way the protocol is designed - it's only intended to be used on local subnet.
That WHY you need to use proxy/gateway if they're on different subnets.

Again, both laptop and chromecast sit in the same subnet. Only seperated by Fabric switches which use VxLAN for transporting traffic between. I think that can be a problem of VxLAN

From Fabric perspective, they are common subnet - however the fabric by default do not build Layer 2 overlays across the network. Hence your mDNS traffic is limited to single Fabric-Edge level.

As I mentioned in other post, each Fabric-Edge will required to be in SDG-Agent role to enable Bonjour gateway for local Wired and Wireless users. And these Fabric-Edge switches pairs up with your Cisco DNA-Center to provide policy and location based Bonjour services discovery and distribution across any of the following supporting topologies :

- Bonjour between Fabric-Edge switches within same Fabric Domain
- Bonjour between Fabric-Edge switches within multiple Fabric Domains
- Bonjour between Fabric-Edge switches and local-mode Wireless networks

It only requires your current IP Gateway to become Bonjour Gateway and pair up with central Cisco DNA-Center for end-to-end service discovery and distribution...

thanks,
rahul.
