Cisco 1810W drawing 24.5W on Cisco 3650 PoE Switch

Hello,

I have a network with 350 Cisco 1810W access points that are connected to Cisco 3650 PoE switches.  I have noticed that the APs are drawing almost the full 30W per port.  I believe these APs should only be drawing 8 to 10W while in normal operation and I think they were when they were first installed. This is casing a problem now as the switches are hitting their limit on PoE budget.  These APs are being controlled by a WLC 5520 with 8.3.130 firmware.  I have tried to manually set the ports on the switch to only use 15.4W, but I get an error saying "power denied".  Any help with this would be great.   Thank you.

We were able to get the firmware and upgraded the WLC to version 8.5.151 and now the APs are showing at 14.5w.  still seems high but it's allowing us to add more APS to the switches like we needed.  Thanks everyone for you help.

Looks like CSCvj73077.

Thank you for the info.  Unfortunately, when issuing that command and then doing a "show power inline" it's showing the operation state of the port as "power-deny".  The switches I'm using at 802.3at capable switches, not 802.3af.  Thanks again though for recommending.

Post the complete output to the following commands:

1.  sh power inline

2.  sh logs

FLLCI-SW15-12#sh power inline

So that definitely looks like a bug.  You can try disabling USB ports for a start (not even sure if that is an option on 1810W) and make sure PoE on LAN ports is disabled.

Presume you realise 8.3.130.0 is very old.  If you're forced to run 8.3 for some reason (old APs?) then at least get onto the latest release 8.3.150.x Escalation: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/wireless-lan-controller-software/200046-tac-recommended-aireos.html#anc14 and better still at least 8.5.171.0 (definitely works correctly as above) or 8.10.151.0.

Mine is a little different.  The power draw and the requested level is 24.500 Watts.  I do realize that 8.3 is old but with no support on it for now, we are stuck with it as I can't get the latest code.

Did you check that you've disabled USB (if it's an option although I don't think it is) but definitely that you've disabled PoE on the LAN ports or better still disable the LAN ports if you aren't using them?

And that CDP output shows that it will operate on 15400 so have you tried "power inline static max 15400" on your switchports (we use that in some cases for other APs where we have constraints on power budget)?

These APs do not have a USB port.  We have disabled the LAN ports on some of the APs and they are drawing the same power as the APs with the LAN ports enabled (24.5W).  We have tried the "power inline static mac 15400" command but that results in an error message saying "power denied", when doing a "show power inline"

thanks

It sounds like you're hitting a bug and your only option is to get the software upgraded but using the static port config (max not mac btw) *should* work but trying to do it on one non-working port when all the power is already consumed is completely pointless - you're not freeing up any power.

If you're referring to "inline power denied. Reason: insufficient power" then that's TELLING you there isn't enough unallocated power to service the request.  You'd need to apply the config to all the ports then reload the APs (use interface range command to shut, then configure power then no shut all the ports at once) because the power negotiation is done at boot time.  Then there should be enough power to serve all the APs with 15.4W.

The 1832s will also work 100% on 15.4W - they automatically disable the USB port (at least on current release) otherwise you could manually disable the USB ports.  (we use the static power config for 1832s extensively).

Look at the output to the "sh power inline".    Power "allowance" shows 15.2w left and the AP requires >15.2w.
This is why it is "denied".

Exactly Leo - I've tried to explain that above ...

Some people look at "badges" to our names.

I did try disabling ports 1 thru 10 on the switch and that freed up plenty of power but when setting the port to 15400 or any other wattage I'm still getting the "Power Deny" error
