Hello All,
I was given a 8540 WLC sitting on a CIMC server, and I tried so many times to install the primary image, clear configs, manually upload an image with no luck. I even sent Cisco TAC an email and I was told we do not have a support contract for the device, and all i needed was a RTOS file to recover the image(s). I then downloaded a virtual WLC, installed it and I can ping and login to it via ssh, and web. But now I cannot see the SSID is setup on the WLC, when I tag the WLC with the configured VLAN I cannot ping the WLC and loose connection, but when I remove the VLAN on the WLC I can ping and access even though the port its plugged into on the switch is truck.
The virtual WLC is running on vmware and I downloaded an ova file from the Cisco site. Our current WLC has a limit of 75 and we have exceeded the number and my manager needs the new WLC up and running.
I know I might not have given full information, but please assist.

You need to follow the setup manual fairly precise, it needs some special settings correctly set on the ESX.
Here is the manual for version 8.2: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/mesh/8-2/b_Virtual_Wireless_LAN_Controller_Deployment_Guide_8-2.html
Here for 8.5:

I think you need at least two, if not three VLANs. Is neither assigned interface reachable through ping?
