Why is the default backhaul bridge data rate on LWAPP 1500s in mesh/bridge mode only 18Mbps, why wouldn't I always want to maxs it out at 54?

The default and the only data operating rate is 18 Mbps on bridge mode.It gets this speed from the controller.There is no way to change this speed/

I AM changing it from the WLC. My question is, why is 18Mbps the default, why wouldn't I want 54 ?
