I would like to find out if it's possible and perhaps advisable to use a DNA center appliance to control access points with No WLC?

No Not possible, you need to WLC controller, or any Cat 9300 or highlevel Fabric in box can support WLC features.

Hi,

you must have WLC to manage your APs centrally. that can be MX , stand alone wlc on dedicated device or switch level controller.
