Enabling LAG on Secondary WLC (HA)

dot1x

Level 3

Hi All,

A quick question: We have 2 WLCs in HA SSO.

On Primary, LAG is configured and all the ports are being used.

On Secondary WLC, only 1 port is being used.

We would like to use all the ports on the Secondary WLC, what's the best way to go about it?

Do we need to disable the HA or this could be done without breaking the HA?

Thanks.

You can do either way (console, ssh to redundancy management or service port of standby unit)

If you have SSH access to redundancy management IP of standby unit, you can verify it remotely. YOu

(WLC1-Standby) >show interface summary

management LAG 1000 x.x.x.200 Static Yes No
redundancy-management LAG 1000 x.x.x.201 Static No No

service-port N/A N/A x.y.y.201 Static No No

If it is already in SSO, secondary may already configured with LAG. Are you sure that unit is not configured with LAG ?

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-7/High_Availability_DG.html

If it is already configured LAG, you simply need to patch those ports and it will become same port change bundle.

If it is not configured, best way is to break SSO & then enable LAG on the 2nd unit. Then configure SSO

I'm not sure. Is there a way to check it on secondary while the HA is still in place?

You should be able to run "show lag summary" command on standby unit

(WLC1-Standby) >show lag summary

LAG Enabled

Thanks Rasika.

We would need a console/service port access to run this command, right?

Hi Rasika,

It says LAG enabled.

All we need to do now is to configure the switchports in etherchannel and connect the cables?

Yes, follow the same etherchannel configuration of existing ports.  All ports from a given WLC should go to a single switch (or a VSS pair)

It should be something like "channel group x mode on" with required trunk port configs
