To save time you can use a Flexconnect Group AP upgrades:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/7-5/configuration-guide/b_cg75/b_cg75_chapter_010001011.pdf

Effectively what this does is make a master AP in the flexconnect group which will download the new code and then the rest of the APs in that group download their code from that AP rather than back to the WLC.

It will save time having each AP download the code across the WAN.

Hi Paul,

I have recently upgraded WLC 5520 on 8.7 code and would definitely recommend the following:

 a. AP image pre-download and swap the primary image to be the new image of the AP. (This will help definitely shorten the outage window as the AP doesn't need to download the new code and restart.)

 b. Elect Master AP on the Flex-Connect group (this is mostly done if you are concerned about the WAN utilization). Just imagine for example, 10 APs on one of your remote site downloading the WLC image at same time.

See this link for detail for 8.3 code (it same process for all)

8.7?!? That code has (probably) already reached EoL. I would definitively go with 8.8.120.0, unless there is a bug blocking you.
