Guest Wifi Authentication Radius requests from Foreign

Hi,

We've recently rebuilt our wifi controllers using the standard anchor controller design. Foreign controller in our corporate network and guest controller anchored beyond our firewall in our wifi dmz.

Since the rebuild all our guest authentication requests to both ISE and an external radius server are occurring from the foreign controller not from the guest controller as pre-rebuild.

Its now driving us stir crazy trying to identify what we've missed in the configuration and would be grateful if someone could point us in the obvious direction I'm sure.

What was the idea with this migration? Just new hardware / software or also the change in the topology and/or configurations?

Within an anchored setup it is always the foreign WLC who is responsible for layer 2 authentication. Layer 3 authentication is being done on the anchor WLC. The catch is that with CWA (Central Web Authentication) ISE uses MAC authentication (layer 2) as a trick to be able to send CoA (Change of Authorization). Because of this the requests will come from the foreign controller in this case.

If you are still having questions, please share the current configuration of the WLAN on both controllers (show wlan x) so we can take a look at it.

Thanks for the reply, we had a flash failure and took the opportunity to "clean" our configuration of a lot of obsolete code.

Odd thing is we have had to amend our firewall policies to permit auth requests from the foreign controller when it previously worked without. Also our ISE logs show previous requests from our anchor but since rebuild from the foreign.

We actually use Cisco "reciprocal wifi model" with a business partner (two separate companies broadcasting each others SSID and anchoring to the originators controller, we dont really want to be authenticating on their behalf also doesnt seem right our untrusted guests who can be public authenticating from our trusted controller.

Your configuration works as expected and is correct for CWA. Because you have MAC filtering and radius NAC enabled on the foreign this controller will contact ISE. ISE uses the client MAC authentication phase to check if it is a known client. If ISE does not know about the client it should return an authentication profile which triggers the redirection so the client can authenticate itself.

My guess is that in the past you use LWA where you only had external webauth (layer 3) configuration on the anchor controller. Was this the case?
