License issue with WLC 5508

Hi

We have a WLC 5508 model licensed for 100 access points.

The WLC is reporting that all our licences have been used but we only have 60 access points registered ?

Is there a way for me to rest the count so that a licences used relects the number of actual APs registered ?

Also, if a AP is decommissioned does it still consumer a license ? Not sure how this situation has come about other then old APs no longer registered are still consuming licences.

Thanks

What is the exact error message?

Hi,

*spamApTask2: May 06 13:17:40.649: %LWAPP-3-LICENSE_ACQUIRE_ERR: [PA]spam_lrad.c:407 Failed to acquire license from the licensing module, maximum APs Joined 100/100.

We only have approx 60 APs registered......

What firmware is the controller running on?

Hi

Ver. 8.3.143.0

Engage TAC.
This sounds like CSCua00950.

Thanks Leo., will look into it....

Of course the first thing TAC will advise is to update the code because 8.3.143.0 is very old and the WLC itself is not far off end of life https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/5500-series-wireless-controllers/eos-eol-notice-c51-740221.html!  If you have to remain on 8.3 (which is end of life https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/8500-series-wireless-controllers/bulletin-c25-742339.html)  to support old APs then 8.3.150.x Escalation release would be best as per https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/wireless-lan-controller-software/200046-tac-recommended-aireos.html#anc10

Otherwise better to get onto a supported version like 8.5.171.0 but you obviously need to check that your APs will be supported on this release: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html#pgfId-590411

That might even solve your problem right away.

You should of course read the release notes carefully too before embarking on an upgrade, and if possible test it on a lab environment before deploying to production.
