Mesh Ethernet Bridging

Hi all,

i'm studying for ENWLSDI using cisco official cert guide but i have some doubts about Ethernet Bridging option in RAP/MAP access points.

First of all, the book states that:

"for security reasons, by default, all mesh AP have their Ethernet port disabled. To enable the Ethernet port, the Ethernet Bridging option should be enabled"

so , as RAP is always connected to the network via a Ethernet cable, this means that "Ethernet Bridging" option must always be enabled on RAPs or ethernet bridging must be enable only if some of the MAPs need to use ethernet bridging too?

Other doubt is about enabling this option on MAPs, i understand here i need to ethernet bridging to connect a device to MAPs ethernet port but there's a note in the book stating that:

"If the MAP has an ethernet cable connected and its up, it will use ethernet port as the primary backhaul, and secondarily it will use wireless radio [....] however, if a MAP is left connected to the Ethernet port, it will not build a mesh. Once the Ethernet port is disconnected , it will be looking for a suitable parent using AWPP."

so what's the behavior in this case? how can the MAP be connected to the mesh network if something is connected to it's ethernet port?

can someone please clarify?

Thanks in advance

I think you are confusing RAP and MAP. The statement "all mesh AP" which means all MAP. This way, it does not include RAP.

The second statement is related to the mesh formation. If, during the RAP discovery the MAP is plugged to the cabled network, it will not join the mesh network.

Hi Flavio,

thanks for your reply, about the first statement i wrongly thought that the term "mesh access points" was referring to both RAP and MAP, so in other words, if i don't need to extend tagged-vlans to MAPs for ethernet bridging i can stay without flagging the "ethernet bridging" filed on RAP. About the second statement i can safely enable ethernet bridging after the mesh connection is estabilished

Yeah, thats what I understand also.
