Multiple AP groups/Vlans under single SSID and redundant WLC's

Hello,

90 access points CAP3502, 2 5508 WLC's.

The idea is to use AP groups to provide different IP ranges for different floors under single SSID. Pretty much understandable how it could be done on single WLC.

The question becomes if it is possible to have two WLC's in mobility group with AP groups as above and be able to provade full coverage with same IP ranges in case one WLC goes out of service?

Could it be configured that AP's from "out of service WLC" join appropriate AP groups on remaining WLC or they join default WLAN on it?

I see this conversation from couple months ago, basically it answers "no" to may question

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3293337#3293337

I anyone can add it would greatly appreciated

Thank you

Alexander

Alexander,

This should work.  But you have to have the same AP groups, in the same order, with the WLAN in the group in the same order.

In the topic you referrenced, they never answered Nico's question, instead they worked around what they preceived as an issue.

Cheers,
Steve

Stephen, thank you for your response.

Wondering how AP grouping works, is it AP who knows the group it belongs to or it is WLC who knows which group to put AP based on what, MAC address?

Basically in first scenario, if AP loses ist current WLC, it then finds another WLC and looks for same group it used to belong on first WLC to join.

In second scenario, each WLC should have all AP's listed in the groups, even the AP's are spread b/w two WLC's in normal circumstances.
How it could be done? Not sure if it possible to add AP to group manually by entering MAC, probably just choose from the list of registered, will need to test.

Thank you
Alexander

It's Scenario one.  The AP knows what group it should belong to, and it's stored in NV.  So when the AP hits it's secondary/tertiatry WLC, it looks for that group.  If there is not one, then it will hit the default group.

All features of the WLC support redundancy, so long as you follow the rules for them.  Which in general is backup/secondary should match exactly to the primary, with the exception of the IP addresses.

Cheers,
Steve
