what is the protocol used between AP and WLC to download the firmware

I believe it is CAPWAP. Check out this article. Search for download.

but you mean the CAPWAP has the functionality of ftp to download the firmware

Hi Mahmoud, If they are joined to the controller it happens through the CAPWAP protocol. However you could use tftp/ftp protocols to transfer the image if you are running them in autonomous mode

By default an Cisco AP wants to use capwap, however depending on the model of AP you order (part#) either CAPWAP or LWAPP will determine which protocol the access point will be use initially out of the box.

it is indeed get downloaded through the CAPWAP tunnel as Philip mentioned with the controllers and APs now a days.just double checked with a packet capture to be sure
