Question Regarding AP Image Pre-download

I'll get straight to the point on this one.  I have 84 LAP1242AG access points and a 5508 WLC.  Currently, the WLC has version 7.4.100.0 set as the primary image with version 7.0.116.0 as the active/default image.  Presently, all APs are running version 7.0.116.0.  I need to upgrade all 84 of the APs as well as the WLC.  Do I use the pre download primary or the pre download backup to push the new image (7.4.100.0) to the APs?  Or, should I just do it the brutal way and reboot the WLC and force the LAPs to rejoin and update the software during the boot process?  I would like to have this project completed by the 23rd.  Thanks!

I'll have to check but I read that the image pre-download will remove any backup image in flash and replace it with the new image.  Perhaps I read that incorrectly.  Oddly enough I was able to get my test AP to join our secondary controller after changing it to the master controller.  I tested another AP that was associated to the primary WLC and issued the pre-download command from the primary WLC.  This 2nd AP disassociated itself from the primary WLC and began downloading the software from the secondary controller.  Was that supposed to happen?  My understanding is that the AP would download the new image from the WLC that it's currently associated with and will only reboot when told.

Well the ap will download the new image fro the WLC is is associated to.  SO if the AP moves to another WLC, well the pre-download will not work.  Make sure the primary WLC is set to the WLC that you want to do the pre image download and disable master WLC on any WLC that has that enabled... Make sure the AP stays on the WLC.

Thanks,

Scott

Ok.  First let me say thanks for all the responses, suggestions, and hints.  I have all but 5 APs prepped for this upgrade.  For some reason, 5 of these APs will not take the new image when trying to predownload; it just stays stuck in downloading operational status.  Any ideas why this is happening?

Thanks,

Terence

I would just say forget about the press download for 5 APs. Just switch the WLC code and let those 5 download it that way.

That's what I was gonna do but I'm afraid that the AP may never actually upgrade.  The reason why I say that is because when I force the AP to use the secondary WLC that has the new image, it still just sits there in the downloading op status.  So even without pre downloading, it just hangs and I get the following error in the logs:

*osapiReaper: Feb 22 14:16:23.522: #OSAPI-0-RAD_SW_UPGRADE: osapi_task.c:5119 System has been upgrading Radio SW for more than 30 minutes.

Again, I stress, that this is without predownloading the image to these APs but rather forcing them to join our backup WLC and automatically downloading the software before registering to it.

Thanks everyohe who gave their support and input.  I have successfully upgraded our primary WLC and all LAPs have successfully registered.  I did run into problems with 3 of the APs however.  Two of them had to be manually configured from WLC before they registered and the last one actually had to be replaced with a spare I had.  Thanks again!
