Reset AP to factory default enable password not reset

I was trying to  do a password recovery on a 1142 AP  but  enable password did not reset  and I am stuck 

AP model is   AIR-AP1142N-A-K9

Running IOS  c1140-k9w7-mx.124-21a.JA1

Its autonomous so there is no controller.  Any direction would be appreciated I renamed the config.txt file  but that did not help  I am unable to rename or delete the  private-config file. I get the message that file or directory cannot be found when i try to rename and permission denied when I try to  delete it.

Have you tried to hold the mode button down for 15 seconds while powering up the ap?

Thanks for your response Scott but I did  that with no luck I just formatted the flash (overkill I think)and  I am tftping  a new image to see if that helps

That will do it too, just didn't want to get you in that situation of having an ap with no image:)

Funny that didn't seem to work  its not recognizing the default enable which i understand to be cisco.  I am consoled in if that makes any difference.

Device will not respond to esc or mode button  for me to do that  now. This is weird

At any rate I managed to get in I used  Cisco with  capital  C  which I swear I had done  a couple of times  before  and it worked.

I just did this for a customer. He had 1142 AP with autonomous image but password was lost.

I pressed the mode key for 5 sec and released. The ap rebooted with factory defaults, it kept the ip address

like they have usually done before.

By pressing the key for 9 seconds or more you go for a software-recovery. So be sure you need that.

You see clearly the console reports. "Mode button pressed for mor than 9 secons, waiting to be released"

then the AP takes a 10.0.0.x IP by default and broadcasts for x.tar.default image.

By having a TFTP server with 10.0.0.10 for example and the image ready, the software can be changed

from lwap to ios (autonomous) for example.
