SNMP community and Trap receivers

Hi all,

I have a WLAN setup with WLC models 2504, 3504, 5509, 7100 all over the globe.

I am standardizing the SNMP configuration for all these WLCs. I have created a SNMPv3 user, community string and trap receivers.

When i create a community string or trap receiver, I am not allowed to configure different IPs for the same name.

Can some one tell me if there a significance of the name in the communities or the trap receivers? I mean whether the community name in the communities field and the trap receiver name should be added somewhere or can i give any random name on these fields?

Community string required only if you using SNMPv2c. Therefore you should not use community strings and SNMPv3. Only SNMPv3 can provide auth/privacy. Typically if you use SNMPv3, you can disable SNMPv2c completely

In the trap receiver configuration, it require a name for trap receiver and it does not related to your SNMP configuration
