SNMP community strings in AP and in swtiches

Is there any problem for auto discovery in WLSE, if I have community string "string1" in all APs and community string 'string2" in all swtiches in my network?

Nope. No problem at all.

On the discovery screen you are going to set the credentials that will allow the WLSE to find and read the AP.

As long as the APs within the user-defined scope (the subnet, for example) have the configured credentials, the WLSE can find them and read (and/or write) them.

To test if your device can be snmp reachable do this test first:

Click on Admin tab

Click on Appliance

click on Connectivity Tools

You will be in the network tools and enter the ip address of the device that you have configured for snmp. Click on SNMP reachable push button.

Quick way as a tool to find out if the device will respond to an snmp query. This way you can do this first instead of running a job when you are trying to discover a device.

i have not been able to discover any of the APs through my WLSE.

i keep getting snmp unreachable and cdp timeout error messages.

another thing to note is that i can see my devices on my Ciscoworks but not on WLSE.

both CW 2k n WLSE are on the same subnet.

In fact, I have the same problem. So far, I just use Ciscoworks2000 to export the APs and import them back to WLSE. My guess is you need the same snmp string in your switch network and in your wireless network for the first time discovery in WLSE.

i managed to export out from Ciscoworks and import to WLSE.

but i m still getting the same error message.

"Hop count defined: 1

CDP Discovery started at 2005-07-21 08:39:19.851 (UTC)

10.81.XXX.XXX is SNMP unreachable, unable to read CDP cache."

IP address belongs to one of the routers.

by the way, all my devices have the same snmp string, but we only configured RO no RW.

Is the seed values that we entered b4 running discovery important ??

Seed device is important before you start the discovery, it just likes Ciscoworks. I would input some bub switches and some access pint for the first discovery to test whether it works.

Also, make sure you have CDP enable in global, and make sure your devices are not filtered by snmp access lists.

what do i entered as the seed devices ?

snmp value or IP address ?

You should use IP address for seed devices, and these should be your main big swtiches.
