$ tag by AP name after WLC upgrade

I have just upgraded a Cisco 5520 WLC to version 5.10.110.0, from 5.5.110.0.

All the APs have reloaded and come back on line OK and everything looks to be working correctly. The APs are carrying clients on all SSIDs, but something odd is happening with the 1800-series APs.

All the 1800-series (which the release note says are supported with 5.10.110.0) have come back up, but are behaving differently to other APs

I have attached a sanitised screen shot: Its only 1800 series that are affected, and they all have a $ flag by their name and they all have clean air disabled. Apart from that, they seem to be fine. All other AP variants work fine.

I encountered no error messages or alarms when I upgraded

Any suggestions would be welcomed

Jim

Scroll to the bottom of that screen: "$ Denotes Spectrum Intelligence capable"

So the 1832 does not support CleanAir but does support SI which is the 'lite' version of Clean Air

It's disabled by default.  Follow https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-6/b_wlc_8_6_spectrum_intelligence_on_cisco_wave_2_aps.html to enable it globally and on individual APs.

Oh and if you're going to 8.10 you should be thinking of 8.10.162.0 which has a number of important fixes including some for security.

1800 series doesn't support clean air. So I guess it's ok to have it disabled as I don't have an 1800 series AP registered in AireOS WLC as of now to confirm.

Also TAC recommended AireOS releases are as below (I guess 5.10.110.0 is a typo)

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/wireless-lan-controller-software/200046-tac-recommended-aireos.html

Please excuse my typo, those versions should read "upgrade to 8.10.151.0, from 8.5.151.0".

Reboot the AP and see if the "$" is still present.
IF it is, factory-reset the AP.

Can you say what the $ indicates? I've never seen it before and Google gets nothing.
Also, please note my red-face comment about the version typo...it was getting late

Thanks,
Jim

I have never seen the "$" before, however, I have seen "ASCII" characters at the end of AP names.

Strange thing about these "$" signs is that they are not appended to the name. If you try to search for the APs with $, the WLC refuses to accept the $ as part of the name (not unsurprisingly), and there is a space between the AP name and the $ so it looks more like a flag put there by the WLC.

Getting the on-site team to try a reset right now

Thanks,
Jim

OK, just rebooted/reset one of the affected APs, but it still has the $ sign. I've asked for confirmation that the APs are still carrying clients and will confirm when I have further info

Does the AP name have a space at the end?
Try re-entering the AP name?

Just got confirmation that the APs are carrying clients OK
