Using AP2802I with POE-injector, Fails to bring up radios due to "not enough POE power"

Hi.

We have 3 new 2802I that we can't get to work.

We're using a 3750 switch to power the other 2702 which works fine with our 2500series controller (version 8.3.112.0).

Since the 3750 can't provide enough power for the 2802 we bought a couple of D-link POE-injectors that support 802.3at(30W).

This is where the trouble starts.

Cisco installations guide for AP2800 says:

The AP can be powered through only Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), using:

• 802.3at Cisco Power Injector AIR-PWRINJ6=

• Any 802.3at (25.5 W) compliant switch port

Specification on AIR-PWRINJ6= says:

"The single-port PoE injector provides up to 30 Watts and is compliant with IEEE 802.3af (15.4 W) and IEEE 802.3at (30 W) systems."

AP2800 series should accordingly to documentation  "out of the box" with all features enabled consume 26W

The AP appears in the controller, but with all radios down. The LED indicates low power (flash green-blue-red).
Power Over Ethernet Settings says: POE Status: Medium Power (15.4W) and
Tx Power Level Assignment: Due to low PoE radio is transmitting at degraded power

If I disable the radio on the AP and then enable it the radio goes up. But the flashing led is still there.

Since I'm not a network-technician we called in a network consultant who said (after a troubleshooting) that we needed more power.
So we bought POE-injectors from Ubiquiti that provides 60W.  Still not working.

I've tried to enable Power Injector State and change Power Injector Selection to override. Still no luck.

Other things I've tried in desperation to find a solution is disable CDP, turned off POE for the interface in the 3750.

How am I supposed to move forward with the troubleshooting this?

(How)  Can I turn off the POE negotiation and force the AP to use full power mode?

Best Regards

Logg from the AP.

Thanks for testing. That really sound a case for TAC. You probably can/should replace all your V01/V02 models.

Luckily for us, it is not too much of a problem.  Out numbers of V01/V02 access points were low relative to the number of 2802i we bought.  We had some buildings with 3560X POE switches in them.  The V01/V02 access points work fine with them.

Thanks, I replaced my two UPOE power injectors from Ubiquiti for two Trendnet TPE-115GI POE+ injectors and now my 2802i work fine.... the other two worked fine with my 2960L POE+ switch already so I have 4pcs of 2802i working right now.

Hello All,

I have 2802i in ME mode, APs is turned on but radios are not broadcasting signal,

from UI i can see -

Power status: PoE/Medium Power (15.4 W)
Please note that I'm using a PoE from Cisco (link below).

https://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Business-Gigabit-Ethernet-Injector/dp/B00L0L0I9G

Is there any CLI that force the AP to run at full power?

thank you

I'm having the same problem with AIR-AP2802I-E-K9 v3 and 30W power injector CISCO DPSN-35FB-A, AP switched to Medium Power (15.4 W) after initially it is displayed/detected in full Power.

Interesting I have this 30W injector working without problems with AIR-CAP3702I-E-K9 V06 + extension AIR-RM3010L-E-K9, all radios are enabled and working and power it is detected as DC / full Power.

I've been able to resolve this by disabling CDP on the switchport BEFORE booting up the WAP.  This allows the WAP to negotiate with the injector without the noise from the switchport and its POE only capability.  Not having CDP on these ports stinks but I've been able to use LLDP to keep an eye on these.

One more thing, if your switch does support PoE, you need to disable it
before attaching the AP when using a PoE adapter. Typically you can then
leave CDP active. To disable it on the port:

int gi0/x
power inline never

The difference between AP3702 and AP2802 is that the former may be not using PoE negotiation but the later does it.

When modern APs power on, they only require a minimum PoE bugget initially, and when more clients connect to the radios the AP solicit that via LLDP or CDP, but the problem maybe in the PoE injector that could not understand that, so you only get using 802.3at-PoE.

The same happen to modern APs that require PoE+ and are connected to Meraki MX PoE+ ports 11-12, they normally receive only standard PoE and they keep alerting about Medium Power so having issues with connectivity. This is confirmed by Meraki support as the MX does not support LLDP-Med nor CDP even when this is announced to be PoE+ capable, but the support for PoE active negotiation is omitted in Meraki's documentation. (These weird issues are solved in modern Catalyst APs that disable some radios or chains so to reduce PoE consumption and adapt, hence lowering performance)

In short CISCO made a mess for 2802/3802... and other AP's to work only with 802.3at injector that have sw active negotiation on cdp/lldp and they not respect hw negotiation defined by IEEE 802.3af/at standard.
