Video Telepresence unit on wifi

NFRWWT Internal

Hello,

We have a video telepresence unit on a cart that is pushed around on a webex showing different parts of the data center. When unit roams it causes the unit to drop packets and look pixelated. Has anyone tried this before and had any success?

I cant remember the TP unit part number but its connected to a pre-shared key wireless network. Thanks for the help!

Do you expect to roam while video call is going on ? If so, you have to look at some fast roaming mechanisms like 802.11r on that WLAN. Also make sure you have good RF (RSSI/SNR) to keep higher data rate connection while roaming from one AP to another. Note that enabling 802.11r could have negative impact on client who does not support it. (so test it with your client types before go ahead & implement it)

If you are using 802.1X then CCKM (Cisco proprietary fast roaming) is a good choice as well. Again CCKM support will be limited to certain client devices.

I don't think it is only roaming, you need to look at you total Wi-Fi setup in this datacenter.

if you want stable Wi-Fi during movement within a datacenter keep in mind you are moving between lots of metal cabinets!

There will be many reflections an many points with good but also very poor signal (same signal from multiple directions)

You may need to design a good Wi-Fi-plan with directional antennae to "beam" into hot and cold aisles.

if you are using separate cubicles, you may need to create cells within the cubicle.

If possible, It may be easily improved by connecting an external antenna on the device/cart, using a pole so it reaches above the cabinets so the AP are "in line of sight" (you may need an extra wifi adapter that allows external antenna)
