All the light weight access points support pre-download images, Access points with 16-MB total available memory may not have enough free memory to download an upgrade image and may automatically delete crash info files, radio files, and any backup images to free up space. However, this limitation does not affect the predownload process because the predownload image replaces any backup image on the access point.

1242 will not work for the pre-download. You must have a certain number of free memory also:

I believe it depends on the code version and the hardware. Some access points do not have the same amount of storage to save some of the newer (larger) images.

What does your environment look like in the way of hardware and code you are looking to upgrade to?

There are only AP1242AG and AP1602 with a 5508 WLC.

Want to upgrade from 7.6.110.0 to 8.0.131.0

Only one way to find out. Do a push and see what takes. Know when you push some aps drop by breaking the capwap Tunnel.

Also note that your 1242's will not be supported past 8.0 code release. Just keep that in mind as you look toward future upgrades.
