hi! can i connect a 1242 cisco ap (autonomous setup) into a non cisco switch (eg. linksys or dlink) and configured it as a guest vlan but user will need to key in password and username to login?

As I can understand , you are interested in connecting Your 1242 autonomous AP to non-cisco switch while having security measures on the WLAN created ( SSID ) on the AP to prompt for username & Password.

You can do that with no issue.

Regarding the Security measure you should configure the AP to act as authenticator for one of the EAP types.

hi! does that mean that i configure the AP as an authenticator....there won't be a need to have a external radius or authentican svr right? I just need my 1242 AP to be able to prompt user to key in passphase/password, or account to login with password requierd. Are both of these authentication methods possible in this AP in a 1-2 APs environment without any svr?

Of course you can configure the AP to be as Authenticator and backend authentication server at the same time.
