hi! can i connect a 1242 cisco ap (autonomous setup) into a non cisco switch (eg. linksys or dlink) and configured it as a guest vlan but user will need to key in password and username to login?

As I can understand , you are interested in connecting Your 1242 autonomous AP to non-cisco switch while having security measures on the WLAN created ( SSID ) on the AP to prompt for username & Password.
You can do that with no issue.
Regarding the Security measure you should configure the AP to act as authenticator for one of the EAP types.
Here is a couple of links that would help in both cases:

hi! does that mean that i configure the AP as an authenticator....there won't be a need to have a external radius or authentican svr right? I just need my 1242 AP to be able to prompt user to key in passphase/password, or account to login with password requierd. Are both of these authentication methods possible in this AP in a 1-2 APs environment without any svr?

Of course you can configure the AP to be as Authenticator and backend authentication server at the same time.
