WLC 2106 and iPad Airprint

I have been trying to get Airprint to work in our network.  Topology is a 255.255.255.254.x network that has mostly wired with wireless all under the same subnet.  Airprint will not discover printers if on the WLC2106 WiFi network but if the iPad or iPhone is connected to some small Linksys WiFi router, it works.

What should be enabled or disabled on the WLC2106 to get Airprint to work?  I think I've tried everything.

Thanks,

Andrew

How about enabling broadcast forwarding on the WLC ? And maybe configuring multicast forwarding as well ?

Not sure what Airprint is actually doing.

By default a WLC will block broadcast and multicast, so this would explain.

Is the printer and the iPad on the same subnet ? I dont think it will work otherwise ... Also, MULTICAST needs to be enabled on your wireless network.

You both are right.. Multicast is disabled.  But when I go to enable it, it asks for a group address. Should it be 224.0.0.0?  Or what?

THanks guys.   this must be the problem.

Tried 224.0.0.0, 224.0.0.251, 239.0.0.0, 239.1.1.1, and many other group

addresses that I've found recommended.  Not sure which one it's looking for.

Have Broadcast forwarding, and IGMP enabled too.  Still not working.   This may be the same as access Bonjour printing services too.

Did you enable PIM on your routers?

Yep... double checked that.  Airprint works on the same network using a Linksys wifi... just not the 2106... so far.  Still have hopes that this will work.

are you sure IGMP snooping is enabled on the WLC?

Yes... I tried it with it both enabled and disabled.  doesn't work either way.

Here's the summary of what works and what doesn't using the WLC and Linksys Wifi all on the same subnet.

IPADAirprint ActivatorRESULTS
WLCWLCDoesn't Work
WLCWiredDoesn't work
LinksysLinksysWorks
LinksysWiredWorks

WLC:

Broadcast Forwarding: Enabled

Ethernet Multicast Mode:  Multicast

MGA:  235.0.0.1  (Also tried other addresses as mentioned in a previous post)

Enable IGMP Snooping: Checked

IGMP Timeout (seconds): 60

are you sure ip routing and you have PIM enabled on your routed interfaces ...

What routers and swicthes are you using ? Can you draw out your network ?

That would be...

WLC 2106 (and Linksys WiFI) -> 3Com 4500G -> WatchGuard Firebox x1250e -> Cisco 7100 -> Internet

The network is handling Multicast fine with the Linksys WiFi.  Just not with WLC.  Also, devices on the WLC can communicate with everything else on the subnet with no issues.  Just the Airprint feature is not working.

Thanks George.

Andrew,

Did you figure this out?  I am having the same issues as well as airshare not working thorught a WLC 2106.

Thanks

Chris

I was able to get this working - here are my settings and versions:

WLC2106:

Software Version: 7.0.98.0

Broadcast Forwarding: Enabled

AP Multicast Mode:  Multicast

MGA:  224.0.0.1

Enable Global Multicast Mode:  Checked

Enable IGMP Snooping: Checked

IGMP Timeout (seconds): 60

iOS version: 4.3 on iPhone and iPad

HP printer: C510a

When I disabled any of the above settings - the printing stopped working.

Now - for good measure I made changes to my 4402 controller since there are a few changes to that config in order to support HREAP.  These settings worked also.

WLC4402:

Software Version: 7.0.98.0

Broadcast Forwarding: Enabled

AP Multicast Mode: Unicast (H-REAP supports 'unicast' mode only.)

Enable Global Multicast Mode:  Checked

Enable IGMP Snooping: Checked

IGMP Timeout (seconds): 60

iOS version: 4.3 on iPhone and iPad

HP printer: C510a

I hope someone finds this useful.

What about for a standalone AP?
