Hi All,
We currently have 4 x WLC 5500 (AIR-CT5508-K9) V01 and V02
So two in one datacenter and the other two in another datacenter. They are connected via Mobility group to and BOYD open wifi with an Anchor WLC the other 1.
All four of them are 7.4.110.0 and the APs we use are AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 and AIR-CAP2602I-E-K9.
We are looking to get 2700 or 3700 AP so we can use 802.11ac, but we need to upgrade all WLC to 7.6.130.0.
1. is it a direct upgrade from 7.4.110.0 to 7.6.130.0?
2. If I upgrade one datacenter one weekend and the other next weekend, during that week two WLC would be 7.4 and other two 7.6 would it break or cause issue with Mobility group to and BOYD open wifi with an Anchor WLC?
3. Can any please provide step to step guide for the upgrade from 7.4 to 7.6?
Many Thanks
appreciate it

Hi
1. is it a direct upgrade from 7.4.110.0 to 7.6.130.0?
Yes , it is a direct upgrade & you can refer this release notes for more information (table 5)
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn76mr03.html#68333
2. If I upgrade one datacenter one weekend and the other next weekend, during that week two WLC would be 7.4 and other two 7.6 would it break or cause issue with Mobility group to and BOYD open wifi with an Anchor WLC?
No, 7.4 & 7.6 are compatible to each other & nothing should break.
3. Can any please provide step to step guide for the upgrade from 7.4 to 7.6?
First make sure required images are on a TFTP server where it can reach from these WLC. Then console onto each WLC & follow the given procedure
a. Take a backup of your WLC existing configuration to a TFTP server
(WLC1) >transfer upload mode tftp
(WLC1) >transfer upload datatype config
(WLC1) >transfer upload filename wlc1-backup-2014-11-21.txt
(WLC1) >transfer upload path .
(WLC1) >transfer upload serverip x.x.x.x
(WLC1) >transfer upload start
b. Upgrade the WLC software to 7.6.130.0 (typically this will take 10-15 min including AP image upgrade)
(WLC1) >transfer download mode tftp
(WLC1) >transfer download datatype code
(WLC1) >transfer download filename AIR-CT5500-K9-7-6-130-0.aes
(WLC1) >transfer download path .
(WLC1) >transfer download serverip x.x.x.x
(WLC1) >transfer download start
c.Then upgrade the FUS to 1.9.0.0 if you haven't done that. Note that this will take 30-40min as well. So get enough downtime as required.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_rn_OL-31390-01.html
(WLC1) >transfer download mode tftp
(WLC1) >transfer download datatype code
(WLC1) >transfer download filename AIR-CT5500-K9-1-9-0-0-FUS.aes
(WLC1) >transfer download path .
(WLC1) >transfer download serverip x.x.x.x
(WLC1) >transfer download start
d. Make-sure all the APs registered & number tally with prior & after the upgrade. Then test your SSID connectivity

1. In regards to Upgrade the FUS, is it required to be upgraded once the WLC are upgraded to 7.6 or is just good practice?
FUS upgrade is highly recommended as that fixes some critical issues.
2. Or I can I upgrade the FUS another time?
Yes, you can do it different time. If you get an outage organized it is easy to do both upgrades at the same change window.
3. Also once Ive upgraded the WLCs from 7.4 to 7.6, should I reboot the WLC and let it upgrade all APs, the upgrade the FUS or upgrade FUS after upgrading the WLC without the reboot which is required?
Yes, you should reboot WLC once each upgrade & let AP to get the image first. Then you can do the FUS upgrade & WLC has to reboot after that as well.
