How can I trunk the interface(s) directly on the WLC CLI?

You just need to configure trunk on switch port not on WLC side.

Thank you - I have done so but then I lose connectivity to the WLC

paste the config of swicthport where WLC is connected.

Also paste the output of this command from WLC: show interface detail management

Below resolved my issue: configuring the uplink on the switch with below (I did not add the config: switchport trunk native vlan x)

switchport
switchport trunk native vlan x
switchport mode trunk

Both side configuration must match else it will not work.
