WLC AP Upgrades Question on automatic update.

Lewis Goulden

Guys, ive got a quick one.

I have WLC             2125 on version 6.0.182.0 and AP's on version 12.4(21a)JA.

I also have a load more AP's (newones) 1041's with IOS version 15.2.

So i have to upgrade my WLC because the newones are not compatable with the old WLC version.

What will happen to the old AP's ?

I was told they will automatically update the IOS version.

These AP's (oldones) are not on site, they are in a differnet LAN.

Any help would be brilliant.

Kind regards

Lewis:

The APs download their firmware from the controller. So, if the controller is upgraded the old APs will try to join the controller but they will find that the firmware they run is older than the firmware on the controller. At this stage the APs will download the newer firmware from the controller, reboot, and come back online again to join the controller with newer firmware.

Please refer to this doc before upgrading code. I don't know what AP model you have existing, but just make sure it's compatible with the new code or else you're existing APs are useless.

Current Controller is 2125 with software verison 6.0.182.0

AP's Currently Connected are AIR-AP1131AG-E-K9 IOS Version 12.4(21a)JA.

I will be upgrading the WLC to software verison 7.4.100.

So new AP's with IOS version c1140-rcvk9w8-tar.152-2.JB.tar will operate.

Can you confirm that the Current AP's will continue to work after the WLC upgrade ?

Kind regards

The 2125 WLC you have doesn't support any code higher than 7.0.x.  You would need to purchase a WLC 2504 if you want to use the v7.4.  The 2504 replaced the 2100 WLC's.

Here is a compatibility matrix so you know what code is supported with what device.

So I have almost the same issue here. I have a 2125 controller and am running 7.0.98.0. I have 1141 and 1242 access points. Upgrading the controller software I understand cannot go past 7.x from these posts. Is there any particular documentation I can be pointed to illustrating the update procedure for the access points from the controller? I would like to bring the controller and the APs up to the latest version that the 2125 controller will run.WLC.PNG

Hi Jeff,

7.0.240.0 is the latest you can go on these WLC. In below URL you will find the upgrade procedure & all other important information about this software release
