WLC Captive Portal - Android Cert Issue

Hi all,

Our team has run into a unique issue when trying to test our newly implemented captive portal.

Upon testing on Apple/iOS devices, the portal displays with no issue and functions exactly how we would like. It's a different story on Android, though.

Upon connecting to the SSID, an android user is directed to tap the prompt to continue to the portal. At this point, Chrome opens, redirects to 1.1.1.1, and displays a security issues message. After pressing continue anyway, we're brought to a new page that shows a "connection not private" message, as well as a cert authority invalid message.

After further testing, we're not able to recreate this issue in Firefox on Android. Has anyone seen this before? We think we may need a trusted cert, but aren't sure if we're missing something on the WLC side.

Thanks for any input on this!

Hi

Who is providing the web portal?

Considering it is and external web portal, to solve this entirely and completely you need a valid certificate on external web service. On the WLC you can apply an workaround by disabling https redirect.

Also, avoid using 1.1.1.x. Use 192.0.2.1 instead. Known issue with Android and 1.1.1.x.

If you are not allowed disabling https then you need to install a valid certificate on the WLC also.
