I've recently upgraded from 8.1.130.0 to 8.2.110.0 (a few days ago). Spontaneously at lunch time today, the active controller rebooted. The switchover reason is "active controller failed", but I can't find anything else to give me an indication as to what failed. Any suggestions where to look?

Do you find any crash logs under "Management > Techsupport > Controller crash"

I suspect a bug of latest code. TAC can actually verify this. Have you raise a TAC case for it ?
See below, there are some bugs listed which is addressed in upcoming 8.2MR2
