Hello,
I assume it is requirement that the FUS image not be newer than the IOS image? Please advise if this is an issue.

No, it is not.
Typically FUS upgrade recommended to latest one even though you are running on 7.4.x or 7.6.x or 8.x codes.
Here is the latest FUS 1.9.0.0 release notes & go for it as FUS version.

Typically 30-45 min is required for this upgrade. So arrange a sufficient downtime when doing
