We are in the process of troubleshooting disk mirroring on our RSP440-TR's. Every time we enable, the RSP crashes.
Detailed information on the three (3) scenarios and log results are listed below.
I'm curious if disk mirroring is necessary on our ASR9k's. I've read various posts that reference that there's no purpose to disk mirroring at all along with the following bug CSCus34978 where it references the RSP going corrupt after enabling disk mirroring.
https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCus34978
Any input from Xander & team would be much appreciated
Thanks!

Hi Andy,
It does not matter which SW version you use, the root cause for this problem is that there is a batch of new RSP shipments that come with 5.2.2 pre installed and have set a wrong ROMMON variable that causes the file system corruption. You need to go into ROMMON, issue "unset MIRROR_DISABLE" and "sync", then you can reset the system and your are good.

What are the commands in ROMMON to check to see what the current settings are? Thanks.

I just got this procedure from TAC1. I assume router is running 5.1.3 with mirroring disabled
2. Check if this variable is set on both RSPs and clear them:
! on active RSP
run attach 0/RSP1/CPU0 ! or 0/RSP0/CPU0
nvram_rommonvar MIRROR_DISABLE
! it may list "y" here, meaning it is set
! if variable is set, then clear it:
run nvram_rommonvar MIRROR_DISABLE ""
! on standby RSP
run attach 0/RSP1/CPU0 ! or 0/RSP0/CPU0, depending on which RSP is a standby
nvram_rommonvar MIRROR_DISABLE
! if variable is set, then clear it:
nvram_rommonvar MIRROR_DISABLE ""
3. Reload the router:
admin reload location all
But I cant test it for the next few days.

Marco

Marco - I tried your commands on a set of RSP440 we just received and I'm not really sure it did anything:
I'm assuming this means the variable is not set in rommon, correct?

Hi Beniamin.
It seem so.
Actually I got just 2s out 8s 440s with the variable set.

Regarding the disk mirroring in general, as of today you can only install the OS on disk0 or disk1, there is no way to install it on the harddisk. So your whole OS runs on a single flash disk. As you probably know, there is a difference between IOS and IOS-XR, as the latter does regularly accesses the flash disk, its a complex OS that is not loaded into memory at once like in IOS. So corrupting the flash disk is like corruption your C: drive in Windows, its not a good idea. As you have multi Gigabit on your harddisk, there is literally no use for disk1, so using it for disk mirroring is still better than doing nothing with it, though if the OS does not correctly recognize that disk0 is faulty, yes then there is a chance that also disk mirroring does not safe you from problems, which are according to my experience interestingly not so much related to the box stopping traffic forwarding but more that you are not able to login any more via SSH or console because those processes that let you access the box, yup they need to read from the flash disk first ;)

Excellent point, Florian.
One more question for you - can you explain the relationship between disk0: on RSP0 and disk0: on RSP1? I expected that it was a 1:1 symmetry (that the files are the same on both disk0: on RSP0 and RSP1). However, when a do a dir disk0: when RSP0 is active and a dir disk0: when RSP1 is active, I am showing differences in the files present.
02-04-2015 10:03 AM
The dir command does not output the files in the same order, and there will be a few subtle differences but for the most part the packages, configuration, etc will be synced between the RSPs install media (disk0) automatically.
Thanks,
Sam
02-04-2015 10:24 AM
Sam - this does not appear to be the case. To test my hypothesis, I copied my 5.2.2 PIE and SMU files to disk0: while RSP0 was active. I ran a dir disk0: and saved the output. I then forced failover to RSP1 and ran a dir disk0: there. The files I just loaded on RSP0 disk0 are not present. For giggles, I tried to do an admin install add disk0:/xxx sync and it failed indicating the file not present.
I'm working with TAC now. SR 633501133
