Hi friends ,

What is the necessity of retain route-target all command on BGP RR? (IOS XR)

When I tried with and without this did not notice any difference in sh bgp vpn4 unicast table .

Hi Ratheesh,

when a bgp speaker in vpnv4 receives a route it will only keep those that it has a route-target locally imported for.

if it doesn't it will drop

"retain route-target all " forces the router to keep all routes received in the table regardless of having a route-target import configured locally

I believe you dont' need to configure it in a route-reflector, it's already enabled by default. You probably would need to configure it on a PE, for example in case you configure an eBgp vpnv4 session
